Comments on Youth Ministry (e.g., other effective elements of youth ministry):
1. It is extremely important to our children to learn values from their parents first, and to be instructed in the teachings of the Bible and to have someone to teach them about the real world. This also is true for the church.
2. What are the resources of the Diocese that complement this community, and, offer others a unique opportunity as outreach from within to attracting others without?
3. We really need a full time youth minister who is young enough to identify well with the middle and high school aged kids.
4. Not applicable--no teens
5. critial mass is the most important thing with youth. The youth want to be surrounded by other youth. Number has been the game at St. Johns for ever. We must grow to have a sucessful youth group.
6. A spiritually based youth program produces spiritually well balanced adults. I would support and help any youth program St. John's offered.
7. i used to be a full-time youth minister in the episcopal church and being full-time paid was an asset to the churches that i served only because there was someone on staff to build a program geared towards the youth and to be around to hear complaints, comments, and praise for the program. not having a full-time youth minister can be a good thing in that volunteers tend to put more of themselves into a program without having to put up with all of the background stuff.
8. We need to teach our youth ways to face being a Christian and leading a Christian life. They need to hear multiple viewpoints and should incorporate community service/mission trips as part of their stewardship.
9. My child chooses not to participate in the youth misistry.
10. All items were rated 1, as I have not teenage children attending St. John"s.
11. Not applicable
12. We need someone to work with youth who is both experienced and enthusiastic. Having someone who was paid did not do much for St. Johns the last time, so that isn't high on my list. But just parents is not satisfactory either, unless the parents are exceptional. Fun is important, but having fun while growing in knowledge and Christian ministry is the best mix.
13. #16 is not applicable to me. This cateogry is very important to parents with children. Need a category stating "not applicable".
14. I believe this ministry should be a priority in any church.
15. Older kids shoud mentor the younger ones. Activities should be all inclusive for the most part. i believe a youth minister brings the kids together and helps them feel an important part of the church. Whereas, the adults have Father Al and the others who participate in the services, a youth minister is someone who is there for the kids.
16. Again, not really applicable to my wife and me.
17. I think we are too small at this point to worry about a distinction between the tweeners and the teens. It's more important to focus on events that have significance in their lives. Engage in discussions about sex, drugs, peer pressure, drinking, difficulties making friends, parental relations etc. These are important topics for tweeners and teens.
