Worship Ministries Acolytes
serve in a variety of capacities including Torch Bearer, Crucifer, Thurifer, and
Server. Acolytes are expected to
arrive early on Sundays so as to be vested and ready at least 15 minutes prior
to the service. Service, as an Acolyte is open to all members of the parish.
Training sessions are scheduled on an as needed basis. Altar Guild Members
prepare the chancel for services, setting up supplies and arranging furnishings
as needed. On an ongoing basis,
they also look after and take care of the sacred vessels, sacristy supplies, and
chancel furniture. The ministry is
learned through an apprenticeship. Greeters
are the first to extend the welcome of this parish to visitors.
They arrive early to greet all who come to worship on Sundays and other
major Holy Days. They help
newcomers feel at home by introducing them to other parishioners.
Within five days they also write visitors to thank them for coming and
invite them to return. Service as a Greeter is open to all members of the parish.
Training is provided. Lectors
read the First Lessons (usually the Old Testament) appointed at services. They may also be asked to lead the Psalm.
Service is open to all. Lay Servers
are vested
and serve at the altar. They read
the Second Lesson (Epistle), lead the Nicene Creed and function as Intercessors
by leading the Prayers of the People. They
are appointed by the Rector and licensed by the Bishop as Lay Eucharistic
Ministers so that they can administer the chalice at Communion.
Training is provided. Ushers assist the congregation in its worship by
handing out service bulletins, collecting offerings, and ushering people to the
Communion rail. They also help to clean up the nave following the service.
Service as an Usher is open to all members of the parish. Training is
provided. Vergers
help in organizing services on occasions when the ceremonies to be performed are
particularly complex, such as during Holy Week.
Training is through apprenticeship and previous experience as an Acolyte
is required. Last Updated: 10/03/2003 |
